This postcard probably dates from the 1930s. It is a view of Santeetlah Dam looking southward from near Gold Mine Branch. Funnel Top Mountain can be seen in the top right.

Snowbird Mountain Lodge
The Snowbird Mountain Lodge was built in 1941. The access road (Santeetlah Road) was not improved until the early 1960s. Although not directly on the lake the nearby sunrise point provided a spectacular view of Lake Santeetlah.

Lake in the Sky Lodge
Sometime in the 1940s the first lodge on Lake Santeetlah was erected. Named the Lake in the Sky Lodge it sat on a point of land that offered a commanding view of the lake with the distant Snowbird Mountains as a backdrop. An article in the Miami News of 1950 proclaimed it "as beautiful as any spot in the Swiss Alps, but not nearly so far away." Today the lodge is a private residence.

Original cottage
This is one of the original 12 foot wide modular cottages. The exterior walls were only 2 inches thick. Several are still occupied. Several of these were display models in Fort Lauderdale Florida in the early 1960s. The sales office was located near the Ft. Lauderdale airport. The models were eventually trucked to North Carolina and placed on the mountain for sale. Photo taken 1998.
